03 - My personal favorite for 90mm fan units is the Kontronik Fun 600-17 and Fun 600-18. I'm going with the 600-17 for this particular article.

04 - I always do a test fit of the motor, and it fits perfectly.
|
|

05 - A quick look of the front of the motor and mounting holes.
|
|

06 - Make sure the holes on the motor and stator line up properly.
|
|

07 - Determine which hole on the motor needs to be in the 12 o'clock position so that the motor wires on the rear end up in the desired position. It beats having to remove all the mounting screws just so you can rotate the motor wires later.

|

08 - Some blue Loktite is applied to the motor threads only and then wiped clean on the surface. Do not apply Loktite to the bolts as it can touch the sides of the mounting holes when installed and attack the plastic. NOTE: Use it sparingly, you don't want the Loktite to get inside of the motor, just on the threads.

09 - I used the M3 screws and washers supplied to mount the motor to the fan using the allen wrench that came with the fan unit.
|
|

10 - You'll notice the adapter is a collet type which should help insure everything is centered.
|
|

11 - Don't skip balancing the rotor, a little extra time spent doing this will insure a smoother running motor.
|
|

12 - Test fit the adapter to the motor shaft.
|
|

13 - Try to keep the collect permendicular to the shaft when you attach it.
|
|

14 - Next install the collect base washer. Be sure to keep the grooved side facing towards you so it will create some friction and grab the bottom of the rotor.
|
|

15 - Next install the rotor, it should sit firmly on the collect base washer.
|
|

16 - Next put on the upper collect washer. This washer has no friction groves on either side.
|
|

17 - Attach adapter nut and hand tighten. Don't use exessive force as you can damamge the rotor. This would be a good time to spin the rotor by hand. It should spin freely without any rubbing or binding. The tolorance for the rotor and inside of the shrould is very close, if the motor or rotor is not centered properly you may need to back up a few steps.

18 - The fan comes with a rotor cone, this will act as the base for the spinner screw. You need only place it on the rotor and press firmly as it will pop in place.

19 - Here's a picture of the spinner screw, it will be used to hold the rotor cone in place.

20 - Use the allen wrench supplied with the fan to hand tighten the rotor cone firmly in place.
|
|

21 - Your fan unit should spin freely without any rubbing. If this is not the case, simply back up a few steps to #17 and make sure it does before continuing.
|
|

22 - The fan unit comes with a composite cone, you can run the fan with or without it. Be sure you gently twist it onto the end of the shroud should you decided to use it. Don't force it at an angle or it will crack. I generally use a small piece of masking tape to secure it after the controller is connected.
